Help, my puppy is chewing everything!
Share
Puppies need to chew, and they're not fussy about what they choose! But fear not, there’s hope for your furniture and skirting boards.
The world is a new and exciting, and just like babies use their mouths to explore, puppies do the same. They’ll have good days and bad days, but chewing tends to increase as their adult teeth start coming in. Imagine losing 28 teeth and gaining 42 - ouch!
When you’re in pain, you might reach for a painkiller. Can you guess what a puppy’s version of pain relief is? Yep, chewing! It feels good and helps to soothe their discomfort. While the chewing stage can be difficult, having the right steps in place will make all the difference:
Different textured toys
Toys with different textures and levels of hardness are a must; soft teddies and rope toys are great options. Your puppy’s tooth pain and mood can vary from day to day, so whether they need a softer toy or a firmer chew will depend on how they're feeling. It’s best to have a variety on hand to keep them comfortable and occupied.
Puppy safe chews
Chewing is a normal dog behaviour and an action they need to do to feel fulfilled and happy - and if you don't give them an outlet, they'll find their own.
Edible chews are always a winner, keeping your puppy happily occupied, especially when you need to leave them alone in a safe space. Vegetable-based chews are a gentle option, ideal for young pups or those with sensitive tummies. Antler chews are natural, long-lasting, and perfect for days when your puppy needs something tougher to gnaw on.
Supervision
Turn your back for two seconds, and they’re into mischief! During the puppy phase, they need constant supervision to stay safe and avoid chewing things they shouldn't. If you need to step away, even just for a moment, ensure you’ve positively introduced a crate or den as a safe, comforting space. Pop them in with a filled snuffle mat, a chew, or a scattering of treats to keep them content.
Chewing is a natural and important part of your puppy’s development, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy to manage! With the right toys, chews, and some planning, you can help your pup through the teething phase while keeping your home (mostly) intact. Be patient, stay consistent, and remember: this stage doesn’t last forever. Before you know it, your pup will have grown out of their teething phase and you'll be onto the next challenge.
